JEM Counselling is a confidential counselling service based run by myself, Joan Howlett, and based in St Lawrence with additional facilities in Maldon for daytime and evening appointments, also in Burnham on Crouch for daytime appointments only. About Counselling
All of us experience difficulties and challenges in our lives. Often, we can address them on our own or with the help of friends. However, there are times when counselling can be helpful. Professional counselling offers assistance to people who are troubled , whether in their personal lives or at work, or who may be looking for a way to develop their potential to the full. As a counsellor, I will never tell you what to do, but I will help you to find your own way through.
My Counselling Service
As a fully qualified Counsellor, you can expect me to do the following:
- Listen effectively to what you are saying
- Interrupt you only when it is useful and appropriate
- Facilitate your untangling of thoughts, feelings and worries about a situation
- Offer you my insights into how you act, think and feel
- Help you express your emotions in your own way
- Help you work out your own solutions to problems
- Help you accept what cannot be changed
- Help and support you and your relationship while you do all this

Choosing the right counsellor need not be difficult. I am a qualified professional practitioner, I can provide an opportunity for you to explore your thoughts and feelings in a relaxed atmosphere. During your first session with me, we will discuss what it is that you need help with. I will give you an honest appraisal of how I feel I can help you and hopefully you will decide to continue the sessions. In the unlikely event that you feel uncomfortable with me, you are under no pressure to continue.
I offer supervision to health professionals and student counsellors.
